Van Elle
Don Valley Viaduct

John Lawrie Tubulars is one of the largest traders of steel tubulars in the UK and USA, purchasing and supplying new and used tubing, casing, OCTG, drill pipe, drill collars and related products. With a keen focus on the circular economy, we purchase steel tubulars from the oil and gas industry and repurpose them as a high quality replacement for concrete piles in the construction and civil engineering sectors globally.

Project Summary
Originally built in 1880, the Don Valley Viaduct in Aberdeen required strengthening work in 2019. Our client Van Elle won the work to install piles that would form part of a new shock absorber anchorage system that would allow the Don Valley Viaduct to remain in use for many years.
For the project we supplied 40No. 762mm S355 Grade fully fabricated Circular Hollow Section (CHS) piles. These piles were supplied from our Montrose facility in 5m lengths using a variation of 16mm and 25mm wall thicknesses. The piles were fabricated with splice boss connections that Van Elle then installed using its T10,000 RRV Colmar’s with Movax attachments.
Using up new unused surplus pipe as piling is an economical as well as environmentally friendly option for construction projects from residential construction to large-scale infrastructure projects.
